FAQs

What is the difference between standard and premium oil and filters?

Standard or “conventional” oil are refined petroleum-based lubricants, and are the most cost-effective option for vehicles where there are manufacturer approved for use. Premium or “synthetic” oils are highly refined, chemically modified, and more resilient. Many modern and energy conserving vehicles require them per the manufacturer and emission standards.

Standard oil filters are the most cost-effective, made of paper elements, have a shorter service life, and aren’t recommended for heavy duty use - think dusty environments, heavy loads, or extended service intervals. Premium filters typically have synthetic elements, better construction, and are designed to withstand heavy duty conditions.

How often do cars actually need their oil changed?

Oil and filter life can vary drastically. Vehicle manufacturers recommend service intervals based on extensive testing. I believe it is always best to follow the vehicle manufacturers recommendations.

Why?

The truth is, most of the standards oil companies have to meet are driven by the vehicle manufacturers. Almost any time a new API service grade is established, it is in response to a vehicle manufacturer requirement, not because of some great development in the petroleum industry. Also, every "extended service" petroleum product on the market has a ton of fine print noting that they aren't responsible for damage done if a person chooses to ignore the vehicle manufacturers recommend service intervals.

My personal vehicle has 300,000 miles on it's original engine. I follow the maintenance schedule in the owners manual, and am looking forward to running out of pages at 500,000.

What is the button on the console with 2 axles and an “x” in between?

Some AWD vehicles have a center diff lock button. This may be located on the dash, console, or shifter. It is often represented as an aerial view of the four wheels or front and rear axles with an x in the middle. When this system is engaged, it locks the AWD system similar to a 4x4 vehicle. This can be useful if you find yourself stuck in mud, snow, or any other slippery situation.

What's the difference between all weather tires and snow tires?

Snow tires are designed for maximum traction at low temperatures in wet, snowy, and icy conditions. The tread pattern is more aggressive than all season tires, and the rubber compounds are softer. While snow tires provide better traction in cold and wet conditions they wear more quickly than all season tires. Also, snow tires perform very poorly at higher temperatures when their soft rubber gets gummy.

Why is labor so expensive?

Industry labor rates can seem incredibly high. However, those labor rates are typically the majority of income for the business. Even a small shop like Judy takes well into six figures of equipment to open, and will have five figures per month in expenses ! Auto shops are expensive to operate, and like everyone, employees need a living wage.

Why can shops only give estimates, not exact pricing on everything?

Once a shop has a diagnosis of the problem, giving a repair estimate which is accurate shouldn't be a problem. This is the reason Judy goes by book time. However, just like health care, diagnosis is often half the battle. Shops can spend days diagnosing electrical gremlins, and in these rare cases often discount the labor required significantly. Any good shop will keep the customer informed throughout the process, be honest about their costs, and give the customer options regarding their service.

What types of auto repair services do you offer?

At this time, we are able to do most mechanical repairs (engine, transmission, brakes, headlight changes, etc) and maintenance services (oil change, brake fluid, flat tire repair, alignments, etc).

How often should I get my tires changed?

There isn’t a set time when you should replace your tires, it depends on the wear, the mileage, driving habits, and the age of the tires. One way you can tell if your tires need to be replaced is to look at the wear bar. This is a small bar in between the tread on your tires. If it is flush with your tires, then it is time to replace them!

Some ways to make your tires last longer: make sure your wheels are aligned properly, rotate and balance your tires regularly - we suggest doing this about every other oil change.
